My name is Oran Terra, and I am so excited to be the editor-in-chief for The Script this year! A little about me; I was born in Colorado but grew up here in the Bay Area. I love dogs and sci-fi books and meeting new people–if you see me on campus, please don’t hesitate to say hi! It was no intention of mine to major in journalism or work at the school newspaper, yet a year after I took the Journalism 22A course on a whim, I find myself writing a ‘letter from the editor’. While my journey to The Script was somewhat random, The Script’s existence is anything but random. If not for the combined efforts of staff, faculty and students–such as our exceptional advisor, Vanessa Santillan-Nieto; the professors who run Journalism 22A/B; the previous editorial teams who laid the foundation for what we do today; and the student writers who share their triumphs, failures, lessons, excitement and joy — The Script would have ceased long before I ever stepped foot on campus. The Script is run as an independent body, by students for students. Local newspapers reflect the communities they serve, and The Script aims to reflect Foothill honestly and pridefully. My goal as editor-in-chief is to enable The Script to (continue to) be a platform for student voices. School newspapers have spearheaded movements, spoken out against injustice, and showcased the kindness and humanity that exists on campuses around the globe.
This year, your writing, art, or support can uplift the people and stories that make up Foothill College. To those who want to speak their mind or showcase their skills in photoshop or photography or oil painting or just try something new, I ask, no, I demand you do so. Whether you come work with us at The Script or with any of the exceptional centers and clubs here at Foothill, your engagement is the fuel that keeps this fire going. Selfishly, I can’t wait to report all the amazing things we all accomplish this year!
