Cupertino, CA – October 24, 2024 – Vibrant colour, pulsating music, and strong community spirit marked the Diwali celebration organized by the Indian Students Association at De Anza College in the evening of October 24, 2024. Set in the Main Quad of the college, the event presented students and faculty members with an exuberant atmosphere to learn about the traditions and cultural value of Diwali, popularly known as the Festival of Lights.
The event was aimed at sharing the rich cultural heritage of India and giving an opportunity for students from different backgrounds to be involved in a common cultural activity. Diwali is one of the most widespread festivals in India, but it is also a representation of victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Traditionally, Diwali is celebrated by lighting lamps called Diyas, drawing colourful Rangoli designs at home, distributing sweets, and celebrating with family and friends.
Galore of Cultural Performances and Activities
The event was replete with activities, performances, and hands-on engagements. Among the major events were a series of dance performances that range from traditional Indian dances through to modern Bollywood and hip-hop mixes. Throughout the evening, the students and staff hit the floor to popular Bollywood hits; choreographed both by student groups and faculty members themselves.
In addition to the dances, there was a Mehendi station where many attendees had intricate designs painted onto their hands, one of the most popular Diwali traditions among women. Another station allowed participants to decorate their own Diyas, small oil lamps signifying the triumph of light. Later, these Diyas would grace the surroundings of the entire event venue, adding to the already festive atmosphere.
Large food stalls serving various traditional Indian cuisine items and sweets were also a big attraction. The vendors doled out plates of samosas, gulab-jamun, jalebi, and many other Indian delicacies that allowed people to taste the flavours from the subcontinent. The smell of spices in the air and the richness of colours in the venue created an atmosphere that was truly Diwali.
A Diverse Community Comes Together
Although the campus is a home to students of all cultural backgrounds, there was still a wide array of attendees for Diwali from those who knew all about this festival to those who attended for the first time. “Diwali is about light, community, and celebration, and that’s what we’re doing here today—coming together to share these traditions with all of you,” said ISA President Shlok Goel.
Apart from the students, quite a few faculties also participated in the celebration, with a few dancing on stage, adding an unplanned dash of humour and light-heartedness in the evening. Members from various faculties found themselves on stage for a group dance-timed and playful-that added to the bonding between students and staff.
One attendee, De Anza sophomore Narayan Pharkya, said, “I have never celebrated Diwali, but the energy tonight is amazing. It’s fun to learn about the traditions and try the food. I can’t wait to come back next year!”
The Importance and Role of Cultural Events on Campus
But the event at De Anza was lots more than fun, it was to highlight the importance of Diwali and similar cultural festivals. With many international students attending the college, these events offer a fabulous platform to introduce the important cultural traditions to others that may or may not know about them. By showcasing Diwali, the Indian Students Association at De Anza helped bridge gaps in culture and inspired students to celebrate diversity.
Organizers said the event also provided an opportunity to make people aware of Diwali’s deeper meaning beyond celebratory aspects. Diwali is a time of reflection, renewal, and connecting with loved ones. It’s a reminder of values that deal with community, generosity, and hope.
