Summertime has always been revered for it’s ability to make people strip down to the bare minimum.  Whether your gym bodied or nowhere near it, when the sun comes out there isn’t a jacket in sight.  One of the most popular things to do, once reserved for women but now beloved by men alike, is the infamous cut-off shorts.  Although several may try, not too many know how to achieve results that guarantee the finished product a spot in your closet until next Summer, rather than marked $2 at a local thrift shop.  It can be so easy to destroy every pair of pants you own by making the rash decision to apply senseless alterations, however, always remember that fashion is an art form recognized by some but only mastered by few.  Here are foolproof instructions on how to construct a usable pair of denim shorts out of jeans.

  1. Most people are afraid to cut serviceable pants out of fear they will ruin them.  They would prefer to use old and ill fitting clothing.  Unfortunately, the first step in crafting a favorable chop is selecting a pair that fits you adequately.  Larger or smaller pants will still be too large or too small once they are cut.  If you want to have a positive experience with the clothing you will be creating, you must make sure you’ve had one from the very start.
  2. Determine how long or short you would like to have your denim shorts.  Never go in expecting to be happy with whatever comes out of the operation.  I know it’s exciting to create something new, but after that excitement wears off, you will absolutely hate what you have done.  Always remember that your safest bet is to leave excess length so that you can continue to shorten slowly as you continue.  Longer length is desirable if you’re opting for a cuffed style.
  3. Turn pants inside out and prepare for the chop.  You may cut directly across, or slightly angle upward from the inseam out in a V shaped manner, making sure not to cut your pockets.  The latter will allow for the look of longer, leaner legs.  To achieve a tight cuff, turn jeans right side out, form the cuff, and use iron to firmly steam the section.  Since most pants are not used with heavy elasticity, for non cuffed results, make sure to create a small fold under and (fabric) glue down.  Afterwards, iron with steam firmly and set somewhere safe to dry.  For a more rugged look, run shorts through a wash and dry cycle.
  4. You’re almost finished!  This step is only for those looking to cuff their shorts.  Sew in a few stitches at the outer leg in order to keep the cuff securely in place.  Most people believe that anything involving a needle and thread is tedious work, but realistically, it is the best way to preserve the life of the item you are constructing.  You may still turn out ideal results without this last step.

The next time you’re in the market for a cute pair of shorts, channel your creative side and don’t be afraid to craft from scratch.  By following these simple rules, I am confident that you can conquer the perfect cut.

Happy Summer Ladies!
